LiFi for Industry 4.0

LiFi is mobile communications by using the light. LiFi can be used next to Wi-Fi and 5G, so that radio provides ubiquitous coverage and light adds unlimited capacity. This talk will focus on LiFi for Industry 4.0. LiFi is deployed at the ceiling as a dense grid of wireless access points with a few meters of distance. For Industry 4.0, LiFi is operated as a large, distributed multiple-input multiple-output system.

This approach reuses the optical spectrum efficiently and allows parallel wireless links to a large numbers of mobile devices in crowded scenarios.

LiFi does not penetrate through walls, i.e., there is no interference. The unique properties of light enable cable-like quality-of-service for Industry 4.0: High reliability, low latency, high speed and, in addition, 3D positioning with few centimeters precision.

Question 1: What drives you?
To be among the first to develop new communication technologies, such as LiFi, and bring them to the market.

To discuss Industry 4.0 as a great market opportunity for LiFi.

Question 3: What emerging technologies / trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
LiFi can be deployed in medical and industrial applications shortly. In the future, I consider LiFi as the perfect complement of radio for realizing the future Internet of Things.

Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
LiFi can enrich our lives and solve problems for the benefit of humanity.

Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
The common “We’ve always done it this way.” argument.

About Volker Jungnickel
Volker Jungnickel (M) received doctoral and habilitation degrees in Physics and Communications Engineering from Humboldt University and Technical University in Berlin in 1995 and 2015, respectively. He joined Fraunhofer HHI in 1997 working on optical wireless communication, multiple antenna techniques in mobile networks and new fixed acess network infrastructures. Besides, he serves as Privatdozent at Technical University in Berlin with lectures and supervises Masters and Ph.D. thesis.
