Optical Wireless Communication for the Internet of Things

by Prof. Jean-Paul Linnartz, research Fellow, Signify / Signify Li-Fi systems

The Internet of Things (IoT) drives a rapid growth of the amount of data communication as tens of Billions of devices will communicate, with widely varying communication requirements.

Today’s IoT is predominantly narrowband. Yet, we also foresee increasing demands for high speed communication at with critical Quality of Service requirements, such as guaranteed high bit rates at low latency. A wide range of future IoT applications, i.e. flexible manufacturing, augmented reality and autonomous cars require the exchange of sensor and video data, processed in the cloud, while doing real-time remote control of autonomous devices.

Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) is very well positioned to provide high speed, latency-free communication for these applications. By networking multiple OWC-enabled access points, one can build a new mobile communication system integrated with lighting. In this presentation Jean-Paul Linnartz describes the challenges of OWC and LiFi, a how these are addressed in practical systems

What drives you?
Creating breakthrough innovations by having a fresh look into new questions, using and extending all the tools and theories that we have known from the past.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
Wireless communication goes optical. The ability to steer light beams effectively to IoT devices solves the key challenges that radio based communication is now struggling with.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Now that the ITU has come up with a standard for LiFi, for which also Integrated Circuits are available today, and according to which Signify has launched products, the market is taking off. In the long run, a transition from LEDs to Lasers and VCSELs will give OWC a profound advantage over radio communications

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Giving 50+ Billion devices high speed and reliable access to the global Internet.
