Italy is often overlooked in Li-Fi market reports, yet Li-Fi is an hyped topic in Italy at the moment and maybe we can learn something from the Italian experience. A vision about future developments in wireless light communication

Unesco in 2015, the International Year of Light, has defined the current century as the century of “Light and Photonics” Thinking in this way, it means that we can dream a century of researches and evolutions in this field. What are the current limits of Li-Fi and what are the research subjects that have to be solved in the next years to continue this progress?

Towards Terabit per Second Wireless Networking with Light

We will show recent research results of the project Terabit Optical Wireless System (TOWS) which aims at building LiFi networks capable of aggregate data rates greater than 1 Tbps. One of the main limitations to unlock the full capacity of the optical spectrum are the electrical-to-optical (E/O) and optical-to-electrical (O/E) conversion efficiencies of current opto-electronic devices.

Light Communication as a part of 5G and Beyond

With internet users growing by the minute, comes the great challenge of ensuring faster speeds and higher bandwidths. 5G, the next wireless revolution, comes as a solution that can cater to the endlessly growing base of users. But 5G infrastructure requires denser deployments of small cells within cities having high backhaul capacity. The fibre optic cables can meet this demand but rolling out an extensive fibre network poses deployment complications. Laying down fibre is time consuming and costly process and makes expansion near impossible specifically in developing nations.

What is Li-Fi?

According to Wikipedia: Li-Fi (ˈlaɪfaɪ; short for light fidelity) is wireless communication technology, which utilizes light to transmit data and position between devices.

In technical terms, Li-Fi is a light communication system (hence based on photonics) that is capable of transmitting data at high speeds over the visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums. In its present state, only LED lamps can be used for the transmission of visible light.

In terms of its end use, the technology is similar to Wi-Fi – the key technical difference being that Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to transmit data.
